Setup & Troubleshooting Guide

First of all, thank you for your trust in Controllino and for purchasing a Controllino Hotspot! We hope that you will have a pleasant experience with it and earn some good amount of HNT! Please read this guide carefully to get your hotspot running as quickly as possible.

Table of Contents

Preparing your Hotspot

Please take out Controllino Hotspot of the packaging box and screw the antenna on it. Next, plug in a LAN cable into your internet router and then into the Controllino Hotspot. DO NOT PLUG IN the Hotspot to your power outlet just yet! We will get to that part in a minute.

Option #1: Bluetooth Onboarding

This is the first onboarding option to try. Unfortunately, Bluetooth can be picky sometimes, and this onboarding option will be removed soon. If Bluetooth doesn’t work, please try out QR Code Onboarding.

Open the Helium App

Before you give your Controllino Hotspot some power, prepare the Helium App. Open it up and follow these steps:

Press the HOME button on the bottom and click on the + ICON in the top-right corner.

Pick Controllino Hotspot from the list.

Click on Skip for now to skip the information messages.

Click on I understand.

Click on I’m powered up.

Plug your Hotspot into your power outlet

Now, it’s finally time to plug your hotspot into the power outlet. Please follow the instruction images carefully.

As you can see, we are using a DC plug with locking mechanism. This ensures that the cable connection always remains stiff and stable and reduces chances that the cable gets loosened or unplugged accidentaly.

Your Hotspot will boot up now. It will take roughly 5 minutes for it to boot up, sometimes a bit longer. Just be patient.

As soon as the Status LED blinks 3 times and then stays blue, press the “Scan for my Hotspot” button in the Helium App. You should now see a message “1 Hotspot found” and a device called “Helium Hotspot”. Press on it and wait.

It says "No Hotspots found". What should I do?

Sometimes, Bluetooth can be a bit tricky. If you can't see the hotspot in the first try, try to scan again after a few seconds. Then wait a few seconds again and try it multiple times until you see the hotspot.

If you don't see your hotspot after multiple tries, try closing the Helium App and shut off Bluetooth on your phone. Then open the Helium App again and turn on Bluetooth on your phone. Now, try to scan again.

If you still don't see your hotspot after multiple tries, plug it out of the power outlet and plug it in again. Wait for the Status LED to blink blue 3 times and then retry.

Bluetooth can be quite unstable on the Raspberry Pi, that's why we will switch to QR code onboarding. Please try Option #2: QR Code Onboarding now.

Option #2: QR Code Onboarding

This is the preferred option for onboarding and will be the only option soon, as Bluetooth can be unstable. Please follow the steps below to onboard your hotspot through QR code.

Not all Hotspots have QR code onboarding enabled!

Every hotspot that was sent after 24th November 2021 will have QR code onboarding enabled automatically. If you own a hotspot that was sent out before this date, please check if you have received an over-the-air update by entering your hotspot IP address in your browser.

If you see a dashboard or login window, you can use QR code onboarding. If not, please write down the MAC address of your hotspot, which you can find in your internet router dashboard and let us know that you would like to have QR code onboarding on the device. Then contact us and let us know your MAC address. We will make an over-the-air update to your hotspot and enable QR code onboarding for you.

Visit your Diagnostics Dashboard

Wait at least 10 minutes to give your hotspot some breathing time to fully boot up. Next, find out the IP address of your hotspot in your network and enter it in your browser. You will see a login window. Use the following username and password:

Username: admin
Password: myhotspot2021

Now you have entered the dasbharod.

Follow the steps in the following video

Follow the steps from time 1:05 to 3:20.

Finish the process in the Helium App

Please follow the instructions in the Helium app. If you see a screen where it asks you to choose your network, click on Use Ethernet instead on the bottom. Technically, WiFi could work, but due to the Aluminium housing blocking most of radio signals, the distance needs to be very close to your WiFi router in order to get a stable and good connection. ALWAYS prefer Ethernet over WiFi.

Then, asert your location. Your Hotspot will be asserted and you will see a “Registering your Hotspot” screen. After a few seconds, a button will appear to close the message and go to your wallet.

Now, the hotspot will be connected to the Helium Network, which can take a few minutes and sometimes even up to an hour. During this time, is is possible that the Helium app shows “No Location asserted” in your list of hotspots or it doesn’t list your hotspot in the list at all. That’s normal, let it propagate for a few hours and you will see it online.

Now you are done – happy earning!

Diagnostics Dashboard

Recently, we have released a diagnostics dashboard to check the health of your miner and perform debugging steps on your own.

Before you want to access it, wait at least 5 minutes to give your hotspot some breathing time to fully boot up. Next, find out the IP address of your hotspot in your network and enter it in your browser. You will see a login window. Use the following username and password:

Username: admin
Password: myhotspot2021

Now you have entered the dasbharod. Please watch this video now to find out how to use it and what options you have.

I can't access the dashboard. What's wrong?

Every hotspot that was sent after 24th November 2021 will have the dashboard enabled automatically. If you own a hotspot that was sent out before this date, please check if you have received an over-the-air update by entering your hotspot IP address in your browser.

If you see a dashboard or login window, you can use QR code onboarding. If not, please write down the MAC address of your hotspot, which you can find in your internet router dashboard and let us know that you would like to have a dashboard on the device. Then contact us and let us know your MAC address. We will make an over-the-air update to your hotspot and enable it.

Explaination of LED Lights

The hotspot has several LEDs that show you what your miner is currently doing. We will update the LED functionalities from time to time, so please make sure to check this page regularly. Here’s what everything means…

Power LED

Your hotspot is powered up and is successfully receiving power from your outlet.

If the LED is turned off, it means your hotspot is not receiving power. Please check the plug and your power connection.

LoRa LED

The LoRa module on your device is powered up and is successfully sending and receiving data.

If the LED is turned off, it means the LoRa module is not receiving power. Please plug the hotspot out of power and plug again. If it still doesn’t work, chances are high you are having a software or hardware defect. Please email support, together with your MAC address, to get help.

Status LED

The miner is currently booting up and is not yet started. Please wait 5 minutes to see if the LED status changes. If it doesn’t change, press Reset Miner in your diagnostics dashboard. After successful reset, run Miner Updater and see if it changes after roughly 5 minutes. If not, please contact our support team together with your MAC address to help you.

The miner has booted successfully and instant syncing is in progress. Please leave your device powered and the status LED should change to green color soon. If it doesn’t change after 10 minutes, try to run Instant Sync over your diagnostics dashboard and Reset Miner after 5 minutes of successful Instant Sync.

The miner is running successfully.

Blink 3x

The miner is getting ready to turn on Bluetooth. Please be prepared to onboard your device now if you need to.

If the device blinks 3 times all the time, it means that the Bluetooth software got stuck. Please reboot your miner and retry.

Bluetooth is turned on. You are ready to pair your device.

If you don’t see any LED light, it means that there is some other software error that needs fixing by our support team. Please contact support and let them know your MAC address and, if you know it, the 3 words name of your miner.

Troubleshooting

I get some Bluetooth errors after asserting location, what should I do?

The app says the Hotspot is "Syncing", what should I do?

This is normal behaviour, your hotspot is now syncing to the blockchain, which can take up to 48 hours sometimes. Usually, it takes less than a day for Controllino Hotspots.

Also, keep in mind that the Helium App can be quite slow on updating the status! It can be that your Hotspot is already synced fully, but the app still shows syncing. Don't worry, this will go away eventually.

If you want to check the most actual sync status of your Hotspot, check your dashboard and click on "Show Miner Info" to find out the current height of the blockchain.

The app says the Hotspot is "Relayed", what should I do?

Your internet router is not allowing the Hotspot to connect to the Helium Network. This could affect your earnings. To clear that up, you need to open up port 44158 on your router.

Login into your router backend and try to find something that is called Firewall, virtual server, port forwarding or NAT.

As every internet router is different, we cannot provide support on how to do it on your specific internet router. Please consult your internet provider or internet router company to help you in that regard.

If you have already opened up the port, give the app and explorer of Helium a few days to pick up your new configuration.

I can't access the dashboard. What's wrong?
